Homework Policy
Your child will be given their homework for the week on Monday. They are stapled behind the weekly newsletter. Each night, your child will complete one half-sheet. One side is phonics/literacy and the other side is math. All homework will be turned in on Friday mornings. Those who do not have their homework completed will do so during our "Fun Friday" which is our class' free choice time the last 15 minutes of school on Friday. Your child will sometimes be asked to color as part of the homework's instructions. They are not required to color all aspects of the homework. Students are also to read for 10 minutes a night. Our class will keep record of the books we read each night by writing them down in the agenda each night. If you need additional books to read for this, your child can select a book from a bin as they unpack in the morning. If it takes you all more than 10 minutes to read the book, continue reading for 10 minutes each night until finished.
Each student has a bin filled with books on their instructional reading level. We are selecting new books from the classroom library each week. If your child selects a book to read for homework that appears to be too difficult for them, it is acceptable to read with them. Letting them read sight words, or any words they do know, while you read the remainder of the text is acceptable as well. Allowing them to explore genres and gain exposure from texts ranging in levels of difficulty is imperative.
If you have any questions about homework, please do not hesitate to ask!
